Mommy Goes to Work

This past week marked a big milestone for Colton and me. Thursday I returned to work after a 12 week maternity leave. I feel so blessed to have a great job that allowed me 12 weeks of paid leave (although not all was paid at 100%). The timing worked out beautifully. Colton was born the weekend after my last day of work so I got 12 full weeks home with him. I was scheduled to return on Monday, March 1 but I decided to ease myself back in with two days. Instead of starting him in day care we had my mom come and she spent the day with him. Grammy and Colton had a lot of fun. He would giggle for her and she even put him in the froggie bouncer we got him that he hadn't been to thrilled about before. He loved it! It was awesome to have her here, she cooked wonderful dairy free dinners each night with the ingredients we already had in our home...that is a miracle in and of itself because we had NO food. I haven't been shopping in at least two weeks, yikes! Funny thing is as soon as she got home she sent me a list of meals for the week with ingredients so I can shop and not have to think about what I'm cooking each night. I wonder if she'll do that every week for me?

Returning to work was a lot smoother than I thought. I'm so grateful to have a job that I absolutely love and that I work with some wonderful people. They made coming back so much easier and having work that you love makes the days go by quickly. The sooner I get in and work and get done, the sooner I get home to my butterbean.

Pumping at work is interesting. My company has a great little room for nursing moms to use for pumping. We have a glider rocker, dim lights and even a sound machine for distraction. All that aside, it's still weird to pump at work. I'm also pumping exactly what he needs right now which is nerve wracking. As he goes through his 12 week growth spurt he's eating A LOT more so it's been tough to keep up. Thankfully we supplement a little with soy formula so that gives me piece of mind. My goal/plan is to pump until about six months at which time we'll wean him off and onto formula completely. He'll be on solid foods by then so it will make the transition easier.

Up next...the big first day of daycare! Josh and I took the day off tomorrow so we could work out a routine in the morning for getting him there. We also want to make sure he gets settled and meets all his new teachers (and we meet them all!). We're dreading it, I know it's going to be the hardest thing ever to leave him there with strangers. We have good friends that use the same daycare for their children and they all love it so we feel confident we're in the best place. It really wouldn't matter where it was though, it's going to be hard for us. The daycare is actually a small Montessori school and it's in an old cottage house in downtown Alachua, about 2 minutes from my work. There are 7 infants and 3 full-time teachers (all early ed and Montessori trained) and we've heard wonderful things about how they help the development of babies so hopefully in the next weeks/months I will be sharing all of Colton's new milestones.

Here are a few photos from Grammy's visit. Colton now likes to be read to, another first for him. Before he would just wiggle and squirm and now he actually sits still and listens. He's weighing in at 16 lbs now and today marks his 12 week birthday. He's the biggest most beautiful little boy ever and Josh and I wake up every morning and thank God he's healthy and happy and ours!

Love,
Jenny

P.S. If you're looking at the actual blog online you'll notice that it's "Under Construction" and I hope to have it fixed this week sometime. I'm working on a new page layout.

Great Grands and the Bride to Be

The bride to be at her shower

The past few weekends have been filled with family! First we had a visit from my Grandma and Grandpa Wills. They live in North Georgia (although we're working on convincing them to move back to Florida!!) and this was their first visit to Alachua to see where we live and to meet Colton. My grandparents and I were very close when I was growing up. They lived at the end of my street in the house my dad grew up in and just across from my elementary school. I would walk up and down that old dirt road, sometimes several times a day, to visit with them. They moved away when I was 13 but thankfully they have been there for the big milestones like high school and college graduation, and of course our wedding. Well the birth of their first great-grandchild was enough to get them packing back to Florida! Thanks in big part to my Aunt Kathy and her husband Roger for going to pick them up and drive them back down. It was priceless to see them meet Colton for the first time. They were like old pros, they both spent time holding him and before I knew it Grandma had him up over her shoulder burping him, teaching me the tricks she learned with her three kids. It was awesome! We've been working hard to get them to move back down to Florida and hopefully that's not too far away! It will be so wonderful to have them here for holidays and birthdays.

We also went back to Crestview this past weekend to visit Josh's family. It was Caitlin's bridal shower and good chance for us to bring Colton to meet the family, including Great Mamaw and Great Nana. We were a little apprehensive about the four hour drive. We decided to put him down to "sleep" at his usual bedtime on Friday but instead of in his crib we put him in the car seat. We quickly loaded up and started driving. He slept the entire way and didn't wake up until we pulled into the drive at Josh's parents house. The rest of the night was tough, not really for him because he was still on his schedule, but for us since we had missed a few hours of our usual sleep time and he certainly wasn't going to sleep in the next morning for us! The next night was much better (we went to bed at 7 p.m.!). The drive home was great, he napped and then woke and ate and played for a while and then napped a second time until we got home. He went to bed at his usual time, phew!

The visit to Crestview was great. Colton got to meet Mamaw and Nana as well as the rest of the family including Great Aunts and Uncles, second cousins and more. We were there for Caitlin's bridal shower which was a lot of fun. She got tons of great things for their home...makes you want to get married and register all over again! Sunday was relaxing, Josh's mom even made me dairy free waffles so I could enjoy the same breakfast as everyone else, delicious! We'll get to see the rest of the family again in just a little over a month. Caitlin and Mike are getting married on April 11th here in Gainesville and we can't wait!!

Below are a few photos from the visits. Up next is a really big event for Josh - his 30th birthday!!!!! Since things are a little crazy around here with the baby and me returning to work this Thursday he wanted something easy and simple. We're getting together with a few friends from Gainesville at his favorite restaurant. I'm planning to have a big party for him when he turns 31 to make up for this year :-)

Hope everyone is doing well!

Jenny

Handsome Little Devil

Today was Colton's first Valentine's Day. It started out really great. We attempted to go back to church for the first time but a morning nap curtailed our plans. Mommy went alone and next time we'll attempt to get Daddy and Colton there too. After church we decided to go out to a Valentine's Day lunch, rather than fight the dinner crowds. We went out for sushi. I love sushi and hadn't had it (well at least not the raw kind) since before I was pregnant. It was delicious and everything I remembered it too be. After that we visited the Weitekamps and our buddy James. James is the son of Katie and Brad who was born on December 26th, just after Colton. They don't know it yet, but I'm sure they'll be great friends!!

While we had a great time the day took a turn for the worse later on. As I mentioned in my last post, I've been dairy free for almost two weeks now. We've seen some improvements but his dry skin and gas haven't completely disappeared. I was attempting to take soy out of my diet as well as dairy but I definitely haven't been as vigilant about that because 1) the doctor didn't tell me I had to eliminate it and 2) it's in everything!! I took it out mostly because I read online that a lot of babies with milk protein intolerance also have soy intolerance. Well...as you read above, we ate sushi today. I didn't use any soy sauce but I'm certain there was soy in the foods we were eating. If they cooked the tempura in vegetable oil...that's soy. If they added it to the ginger dressing...soy and they probably also put it in the eel sauce which is my favorite. Well, a few hours after nursing Colton post lunch his gas kicked up into high gear and he cried and screamed in obvious pain from his tummy. You can imagine how that makes a mommy feel. So, he's getting a bottle from daddy tonight and we'll just have to hope that it gets out of my system sooner rather than later. I guess now I have to be vigilant about soy as well. Yikes, what's left to eat? Fruits, plain veggies and chicken.

Some good news! Colton has discovered his hands. A few days ago he pulled a ring from one of his toys to his mouth, a few hours later he started sucking on his hands and today he put a another toy in his mouth. It was as if he discovered it and then couldn't get enough. Guess we have to start being more careful what's lying around the house and making sure his toys are cleaned well. He's also talking quite a bit. He will have conversations with us making vowel sounds and trying to imitate the sounds we make. In fact, the other night we woke up thinking it was time for a feeding but after a closer listen we realized he was talking his sleep. No joke, he made vowel sounds for about 15 minutes. No cries, no grunts, but very obvious vowel sounds. You've got to wonder who he was dreaming about talking to.

Sleep is getting better. He seems to be pretty consistent with an 8 p.m. bedtime, 1 a.m. feeding, 4-5 a.m. feeding and then back to sleep till 8 a.m. The only time it gets tough is when he gets gas around 5:30 a.m. and we're up until 7 with him. No fun! We had a few really great long stretches a few weeks ago but that didn't last long. I'm hopeful that after his 12 week growth spurt he'll stretch it out to one feeding per night. We'll see though.

Enjoy some new photos! Colton is 10 weeks old today and it's just amazing the difference in how he's grown.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Jenny

Dairy Free Living

My big boy had his two month check-up this week. He was 14 lbs and 4oz and 24 inches long (97th and 90th percentile). He has great head control and could hold himself in the sitting position which our pediatrician said is typical for most 4 month olds, not two months!! He's starting to bat at things with his hands and he follows people around the room with eyes. He loves to smile and coo and make noises and will try and get our attention if we're talking to each other and not him.

The biggest change though is happening in our diets. I had mentioned in my last post that he was having some gas issues really early in the morning. After talking with the pediatrician and lactation consultant we decided that he may have an intolerance (not allergy) to milk protein. If you think about it, it makes since. Cow's milk was designed for baby cows, not people so it's something our bodies have had to adapt to over time. Most grown-ups have no issues drinking milk but we've gotten accustomed to digesting it. Little babies can take a while to develop that tolerance. After ONE day of living dairy free Colton slept through the normal gassy period this morning. After doing some more research online I also realized that the dry skin and congestion he's been experiencing since a few weeks after birth are also symptoms of a milk protein intolerance. It will take about 2-3 weeks to completely eliminate it from my body and his but hopefully we should see big improvements even sooner. The good news, it's something they usually grow out of and it's highly unlikely he'll be allergic later on in life.

So...goodbye my favorite food group, at least for now! Seriously, milk, cheese, yogurt and chocolate are some of my favorites!! I've had to replace them with almond milk and rice milk and vegetables and peanut butter. Sigh. Oh well, he's worth it!

Believe it or not there are some other things happening in our life besides baby Colton :-) Josh's sister Caitlin is getting married on April 11th here in Gainesville. This weekend is her bridal shower at the Ivy House here in Alachua. I'm looking forward to that! Josh also has a big event coming up soon...his 30th birthday! Wow, it's really hard to believe we're both getting ready to enter our thirties!! We can't think of a better way to do it then by adding a beautiful baby to our family. My grandparents are going to be visiting from Georgia with my Aunt Kathy and Roger this weekend. We can not wait! Grandpa is going to be so proud of his big, healthy grandson. He was the one who predicted all along that it was a boy when most thought it was a girl :-)

Coming up later in February we'll be going back to Crestview for Colton to meet his other great-grandparents, Josh's Nana and Mamaw. It's so wonderful that he gets to meet so many of his great grandparents and I know they feel they same about their great grandson.

Here is another video of butterbean and his daddy playing.

Hope everyone is happy and well.

Jenny

Smiles and Baby Talk

7 weeks old today! It's so hard to believe how much Colton has changed in the last 7 weeks. He went from a tiny, fragile little newborn to a chubby, smiley baby in the blink of an eye. He's weighing in at a whopping 14 lbs! At his one month check-up he was in the 95th percentile for height and the 97th for weight and 80th for head circumference. He's got quite the little pudge on his legs and arms now and a big ol' belly to go along with it!

Developmentally he seems to be moving right along hitting the major milestones. He's smiling and following us with his eyes. He definitely knows the difference between "strangers" and his mommy and daddy. He will hear sounds and turn to look and can hold his head up all by himself. He's still a bit wobbly but gets more and more control every day. He LOVES to stand on his feet and bounce and he puts all of his weight on his legs, you almost don't even have to hold him (if he had any balance, lol).

Ahhhh, sleep. The elusive sleep is the only thing we're still working on. As far as 7 week olds go he's doing very well. We have made 8 p.m. his official bedtime and it's worked out really well. We start the bath and bed routine around 7:15. We dim all the lights, give him a warm bath every night and then we change him, lather him up with lotion, swaddle him and Josh rocks him and gives him his final bottle at night. At our pediatrician's advice we give him a bottle of breast milk with about an ounce of formula and it definitely seems to be holding him over longer. Last night he went from 8 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.!! Josh got up and did the next bottle and when I woke up at 5 a.m. (more on that next) I realized I hadn't even gotten up to feed him at all during the night! That was a first for me. The 5 a.m. thing is something we're trying to figure out. For the last week or so he starts grunting and crying periodically from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. He lifts his little legs in the swaddle and passes gas during that time so it's obviously tummy trouble. The funny thing is that he never even opens his eyes. I have started taking my pillows and a blanket and sleeping on the floor next to the crib. I help him move his legs around and get the gas out and then lay down to sleep between his "episodes." He actually wakes up for the day around 8 a.m. If any moms have advice let me know! I think it's got to be the formula so I'm hoping that in a week's time it will work itself out as his tummy adjusts. If not, I may switch to an anti-gas version or just stop it all together.

Daytime is getting to be much more manageable and predictable. He naps in his crib now and it doesn't take us nearly as long to get him down. We're on a routine of napping after two hours of wakefulness which seems to work for both of us. He only naps about an hour but it gives me a chance to run around the house and get things done. He's also almost 8 weeks so we're taking him out a bit more. When he hits 8 weeks we'll be able to take him everywhere with us which is going to be such a relief for me. Target here I come!

Darby is doing well adjusting to him. He seems to like him but since we won't let him lick his head he's not all that interested right now. He loves to spend time with his daddy when Josh gets home from work and I try to walk him with the baby at least once a day. I can't wait until Colton is older and they can play together :-) Darby says he can't wait until Colton eats people food because he knows he'll get the droppings!!

Here is a new album of photos, I'm including a video with some smiles. It's the most amazing thing to peer into his crib and have him look back up at us and smile. I never knew it would feel this good! Oh, and many thanks to our friends at First Baptist of High Springs. Our Sunday School class has been amazing and brought us a homemade meal every Tuesday and Thursday starting January. I declined at first because I didn't want to put people out but I'm so glad they insisted. We get to visit with our friends and have a delicious meal and lunch for the next day. We are so blessed to have such wonderful people in our lives.

Lastly, I had my 6 week check-up last Thursday. Everything is great and I'm completely healthy and ready to return to full activity and exercise. I had gained a whopping 50 pounds with Colton (I do not recommend that!!) but dropped most of it so that was good. I know the last few won't come off as easily - since the scale hasn't budged recently - but once I'm able to get out with him more I think I'll be able to get it off. Even if I never do, it was worth every single pound to have my healthy little butterbean.

Hope everyone is well and having a great start to 2010!

Jenny

Colton's Nursery

I've finally (nearly) finished the nursery. It's still a work in progress as far as the small decor items. I need to figure out how I want to decorate his shelves and I also need to add a toy basket. Here are a few photos. The weather was bad outside so it doesn't look as bright and cheerful as it normally does but you get the picture.

The crib was a gift from Nana and Papa Highlander and the rocking chair was the same used to rock Josh's daddy as a baby. Papa refinished it for us and we're so honored to have it in Colton's nursery. We also have a beautiful rocking horse from Grammy, she stained that one herself. The big stuffed Darby was a gift from Grammy and Grampy Wills and it seems that puppy dogs have taken over... Darby doesn't quite understand why he's not allowed in the room if all the other dogs are!

The wall quote was something that I had seen and immediately knew it had to be in his room. I remember my dad singing an old Loggins and Messina song called House on Pooh Corner. The quote had special meaning because of that and also because we want all of those things for Colton. We always want him to remember how special he is and that he is a gift from God and can do anything he sets his mind to, no matter what. As Grammy always told me, "can't" is not a word in our vocabulary (neither is "ain't" but that's another story :-) ).

The monogram was another special touch from the same company we got the wall quote from. Just in case he forgets his name (or we do, ha ha) we decided to include that. Kidding, kidding, we just liked the look of it.

With a few minor touches we think the room will be able to grow with him as he gets older. The furniture is designed to convert into a full bed so he'll have the set for quite some time.

Four Weeks Old Today

It's hard to believe that it's been four weeks already since Colton was born. It's really flown by! Colton now weighs a whopping 11 lbs 8 oz (according to the home scale) which is pretty amazing. At his last check-up he weighed 10 lbs 2 oz and now only a little over a week later he has put on a whole pound. He's already in size 1 diapers and wearing 3 month old clothes! Amazing how quickly they grow. His personality is definitely starting to develop. He loves to look at fans on the ceiling and of course lights. He especially loves his reflection in the mirror. The diaper changing pad is on our dresser next to the mirror and it's the best distraction for him. When he gets fussy about his diaper being changed we'll just direct his attention to his reflection and it's amazing to watch him quiet down while he checks himself out.

We're on a pretty good routine right now. We break the day up into 3 hour increments as much as possible. We eat, play and then sleep and then start all over again. Only problem is that he loves the 3 hour routine so much he decided to keep it up through the night. I used to get the occasional four hour block but not lately. That's okay though, I like the predictably of the routine we're on and when he's ready he will sleep a little longer and we'll at least have our day time routine in place.

Right now Cotlon stays in our bedroom in his pack and play bassinet but tonight will be his first night in the nursery. We're going to keep him in his pack and play for a while until he's used to the new room and until we're ready to put him in the bigger crib. We weren't planning on moving him just yet but we have a the loudest sleeper on the planet! He will make noises for about an hour (grunts, coughs, sneezes) after he goes down to sleep. He's sound asleep and he doesn't cry when you put him down but it's impossible for us to sleep with all the noise! The plan is for Josh to sleep in the guest room near the nursery and I'll sleep in our bedroom with the monitor for at least a little while until we're ready to leave him alone in the nursery. Unfortunately it's on the opposite end of the house so it's going to be an adjustment for us.

Yesterday Josh and I had our first date since Colton's birth. We went to see a matinee, the movie The Blind Side. LOVED the movie, if you haven't seen it you definitely should, especially if you're a fan of college football. Our good friends Krista and Kerrie took over for us. Krista has two little boys of her own so she was an old pro and we felt totally comfortable leaving him with her, we knew he was in good hands. After the movie we enjoyed pizza and beer with Krista, her husband Jason, their two boys Evan and Drew and Kerrie (Kerrie is my old roommate). It was a great day and so good to get out and feel a little more normal again. We're looking forward to Colton turning 8 weeks when we can take him out on the town with us.

This next week should be pretty busy. We have our post partum luncheon, doctors appointment and some visitors! We have a wonderful Sunday School class (which we really look forward to getting back to) and they are going to start bringing us dinners on Tuesdays and Thursdays. What a wonderful treat and VERY much appreciated. I've been cooking occasionally but dinners are the hardest. I'm always really tired by night time and have such a mish mash of food in the house that it's hard to put a meal together. We are so lucky to have such wonderful people in our lives who care so much about us and little Colton!

We wish everyone the best for the New Year. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2010 and reconnecting with old friends that we haven't seen in a while!

Here are some photos and videos of Colton during his first few weeks. The videos aren't all that exciting but I know the grandparents will want to see them so I've included them :-)

Our First Christmas as a Family

The past three weeks have flown by! Colton has had a few outings (but not many at the advice of our pediatrician) and then this past week we celebrated our first Christmas as a family.

Our pediatrician advised us not to take Colton out in big crowds (malls, restaurants, etc) for the first 8 weeks because of cold/flu season and primarily because if he gets a fever in the first 8 weeks he will have to go through a battery of tests including a spinal tap and I'd never forgive myself if I put him through that just to run to the mall! We did manage to get ourselves together to visit The Babies Room and pick up an Ergo. It's a harness/tote that I can use to carry him on my chest around the house. It makes him feel safe and warm and allows me to get housework and other stuff done. He just loves it and so do I! We also had lunch with our friend Katie (who had her baby 12/24, more on that later) and visited Daddy at work. Another time we loaded up and tested out our new stroller when we attended the post partum lunch at the hospital. There were about 15 other moms and babies that were all under 16 weeks of age. I had a major bout of anxiety when we first arrived - funny how being around other moms and feeling like you have NO idea what you're doing can do that to you! It ended up being fine and I was able to get a lot questions answered and get some advice to help with sleeping and feeding. We'll attend every Tuesday while I'm home on maternity leave. Speaking of which, I will be home with Colton until I return to work on Monday, March 1.

Christmas was wonderful! My parents arrived on Thursday morning, Josh's arrived Thursday afternoon and my cousin Kelly came on Friday. While we couldn't do many of the traditions I've come to love at Christmas because Colton is so young, we were able to incorporate a few. The Sunday before we loaded up with our hot cocoa and drove around Gainesville to look at Christmas lights. We had a blast and of course Colton slept for most of it but it was such a treat to get out and feel like a normal family again :-) Christmas Eve morning we normally go out to breakfast but since restaurants are off limits we skipped that. We did however make a trip to the pediatrician. I noticed a bit of white stuff on Colton's tongue and at some point had read that thrush (yeast infection that develops during breastfeeding) caused white stuff on the tongue. I called the doctor and long story short they had us come in that morning. Of course we get there and it's just a little milk, boy did I feel silly. The pediatrician was so nice and said that a good portion of her job is spent reassuring new moms and dads and she didn't mind at all!

The rest of the holiday went much smoother. Caitlin and Mike came over Christmas Eve and we celebrated with them since Caitlin would be with Mike's family on Christmas Day. The next morning we woke up around 7 a.m. and started the coffee and Christmas music. I made an amazing breakfast casserole and mom made sweet rolls. We opened stockings firsts and then spent the next few hours opening presents and playing with Darby and Colton. For dinner Josh made an amazing roast beef. It really was some of the best meat we've ever hard! We had mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, creamed spinach and sweet potato casserole. It wasn't a traditional holiday dinner for us but it was amazing and may just be a new tradition!

Another exciting part of the holidays was the birth of our friends' baby, James Patrick Weitekamp! My friend Katie (she's been in several other posts) was pregnant and due two weeks after me. They had James on 12/24 and would you believe he was 8 lbs, 14 oz and 21 inches just like Colton! He was also born 2 days early, like Colton. Kind of scary!! Brad and Katie are home now with James and we're looking forward to visiting and spending more time with them. James was a surprise (well at least the fact that he was a boy, ha ha) so Colton has shared some of the newborn boy clothes he no longer fits into. He's so excited to have another good buddy, he now has Connor (photos below) and James!! The boys are all looking forward to next years tailgate, it's going to be a blast.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday and that you all have a safe, healthy and happy start to the New Year! 2009 has brought Josh and I so many wonderful blessings and we thank God every day for all that he has provided for us. We hope for the best for each of you in 2010 and we are so thankful for your friendship.

Love always,

Jenny

Surviving Week One

Wow, what a week! We made it through and survived our first week at home with Colton. The first two days were great, we were running on adrenaline and the lack of sleep hadn't really hit us yet. It was Thursday when we finally started to slow down and it started to catch up with us! Colton is a great sleeper, but it's on his terms right now. He's still a little confused about day and night and he has a very hearty appetite so he eats every two hours. We actually had one day where he ate every hour on the hour for four hours (and those are 20 minute feedings). It's called cluster feeding and apparently it's when they're going through a growth spurt. I'm breastfeeding so unfortunately for me I'm the only one who can handle that part, at least for now. We're going to introduce a bottle and I'll start pumping milk in about two more weeks when we've got the breastfeeding well established. At that point things will get a little better because Josh will be able to take some of the feedings so we can alternate sleep. Right now he gets up with me for every single feeding and changing and I know it's killing him. He's already taken on so many things around the house as I recover from the birth. Speaking of, I'm doing much better but it's slow going. I lost quite a bit of blood so I've had to build back up my stamina on top of the just the physical exhaustion from all that my body went through. I made a trip to Lowe's with Josh last Friday and it about killed me so I've been taking it easy since then. Only quick trips to the drugstore or places nearby.

Last Thursday was Colton's pediatrician appointment. We had been referred to Dr. Kathy Sarantos by a friend of mine and trusting his judgement we went ahead and picked her. We had never even met her and although we'd heard great things we were very unsure. She doesn't take new patients anymore but because of my friend she accepted Colton. Let me just say that I am so incredibly thankful! She is wonderful and I am so glad that she's going to be Colton's pediatrician. At his first appointment Colton got the thorough check out. He's in great health, he regained almost all of his birth weight and was 8 lbs 11 oz. We go again next week for another check up and I'm curious to see how much weight he's put on with all this eating.

Here are a few photos from our first week. Josh's parents came back this weekend to help us out and visit. My mom arrives again tomorrow and will be here during the week. Both parents will be back for Colton's first Christmas and we're really looking forward to that.
